ExploreOur screen printing process
- 1
Step 1. Art prep and separations
Art is separated into individual color layers. Each layer becomes a screen.
- 2
Step 2. Screen burn
The separated art is burned onto mesh screens coated with emulsion. One screen per color.
- 3
Step 3. Production on the automatic press
The press cycles through each color, depositing ink through the mesh onto the garment. Registration keeps colors aligned.
- 4
Step 4. Curing and quality check
Printed garments pass through a conveyor dryer at curing temperature. Every piece is inspected before packing.
Specialty inks and techniques
Plastisol
The industry standard. Sits on top of the fabric for a punchy, opaque print. Great for bold logos and dark garments.
Water based and discharge
Water based ink soaks into the fabric for a vintage soft hand. Discharge removes dye for a soft print on dark cotton.
Soft hand and vintage
Reduced ink deposit and discharge techniques produce a worn-in feel against the skin and a faded aesthetic.
Puff, metallic, glow
Puff ink rises during curing. Metallic and glow inks handle specialty accents and event swag.

Screen printing FAQ
+What is the minimum order for screen printing in Austin?
APC accepts screen printing orders starting at 24 pieces per design. Smaller quantities may be better suited to DTG printing. Contact APC for a quote on specific quantities.
+How long does screen printing take at Austin Print Co.?
Timing depends on garment availability, quantity, and ink complexity. APC will confirm a production schedule with your quote, and rush service is available for urgent deadlines.
+What is the difference between screen printing and DTG printing?
Screen printing presses ink through mesh screens onto fabric, one screen per color. It is efficient for high volume and bold designs. DTG printing sprays ink directly onto the garment from a printhead. It is better for small quantities and photorealistic artwork.
+What inks does APC use for screen printing?
APC runs plastisol, water based, discharge, and specialty inks including puff, metallic, and glow in the dark.
+Can APC print on dark garments?
Yes. Plastisol with a white underbase or discharge ink produces full opacity on black and dark colored fabrics.
+Does APC print on tote bags and accessories?
Yes. APC screen prints tote bags, drawstring bags, tea towels, and flat fabric accessories.
+What file formats are best for screen printing artwork?
Vector files are preferred: AI, EPS, SVG, or vector PDF. High resolution raster files at 300 DPI or higher are accepted.
+What is a screen charge?
Screen charges cover the cost of burning mesh screens for each color in the design. Reorders using the same artwork often skip the screen charge if the screens are still on file.
+Does APC offer water based screen printing for a soft hand feel?
Yes. Water based and discharge printing produce a soft feel against the skin and a vintage aesthetic. Both are available on cotton and cotton blend garments.
+What neighborhoods in Austin does APC serve for screen printing?
APC serves Downtown Austin, East Austin, South Congress, The Domain, Mueller, Zilker, Barton Hills, Hyde Park, and every surrounding community including Cedar Park, Round Rock, Leander, and Pflugerville.
